Lexus flips after crashing into 5 vehicles at red light in Hanoi, driver arrested

    A driver has been criminally detained after his Lexus crashed into multiple vehicles waiting at a red light in Hanoi, leaving two people injured.

    Hanoi Police said on March 27 that the male driver is under investigation for alleged violations of road traffic regulations. Vietnam gains popularity among Filipino travelers

    TikTok is now the most downloaded app in the world. One of the most popular ways users engage with the app is to carry out challenges encouraging people to video themselves doing activities like singing, dancing or acting. A successful challenge will go viral, with hundreds of thousands of people participating. [I]

    While copying another person’s video is hardly original or creative, its appeal, especially among young audiences, is clear. Anyone with a smartphone can get involved. No talent is required beyond a little extroversion and commitment. Consequently, challenges are ideal for those craving the limelight, particularly children, teenagers, and young adults.

    The problem is that these young people are most at risk. This is because the part of the brain that handles rational thought is not fully developed in humans until the mid-20s, making them less able to make long-term plans and analyze risk. Since the young brain values inclusion and popularity, the more attention a stunt gets, the less likely a person is to consider potential dangers.

    The TikTok challenge trend has had severe consequences. In 2020, the ‘skull-breaker’ challenge, involving two people kicking a third person’s legs to make them fall over, caused teenagers in both the UK and the US to be badly injured. [II] Users searching for the skull-breaker challenge would only see a warning about its dangers.

    This reaction was clearly not thorough enough because, in 2021, several fatal incidents occurred from the ‘blackout’ challenge, encouraging people to choke themselves until they passed out. Several youngsters died, including two girls under ten. The bereaved families are now suing TikTok for spreading the challenge among impressionable youngsters. [III] While the challenge did not originate on TikTok, parents claim the platform's ‘dangerous’ algorithms are responsible. They say that the videos were intentionally and repeatedly pushed onto their children’s feeds, encouraging their participation. They claim that the company has prioritized corporate profits over the health and safety of its users. [IV]

    Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming so common in Vietnamese schools that experts are calling it an educational “epidemic”, making children’s vision protection an urgent public health priority.

    At a recent seminar on refractive surgery technologies, Dr. Pham Thi Hong Duong - former specialist at Hanoi Eye Hospital - highlighted the alarming trends: around 30% of students suffer from refractive errors, with myopia accounting for 28%. Even more concerning, in one Hanoi high school known for academic excellence, up to 90% of students were nearsighted.

    Severe myopia isn’t just an inconvenience. It increases the risk of serious complications such as retinal degeneration, detachment, glaucoma, and early cataracts. The WHO has ranked myopia as the fifth leading cause of potential blindness, warning that high myopia rates are climbing fast globally.

    Dr. Duong noted that treatment options vary based on age and severity. Common solutions include prescription glasses, contact lenses, and refractive surgery. For those aged 18 and above, laser-based surgeries can offer long-term vision correction. However, conditions like extremely thin corneas, high refractive error, or preexisting eye diseases may rule out surgical options.

    Recent advances in refractive surgery have significantly improved outcomes. Some modern techniques involve laser exposure of just 10 seconds, and are supported by AI tools that predict visual results not only immediately but also long into the future. Compared to older methods like corneal flap creation or surface ablation, newer procedures offer faster recovery, minimal side effects such as dry eyes, and better corneal integrity.

    Still, prevention is key - especially for children. Dr. Duong recommends regular eye checkups for children with myopia to monitor progression and implement control strategies. Current interventions include overnight orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses, specially designed eyeglass lenses, vision therapy programs, and certain medications. On a broader level, maintaining healthy eye habits is essential. Children and adults alike should avoid excessive near work, manage screen time, use proper lighting, and maintain good posture when studying or working. More outdoor activity, a balanced diet, and nutritional supplements - especially vitamins A, C, E, and zinc - can also help sustain long-term eye health.

    In short, as myopia rises among students, the combination of awareness, early intervention, and modern technology offers the best defense for the future of children’s vision.
