VACCINE

Currently, there are vaccines to prevent more than 20 deadly diseases, which means millions of lives are saved every year. Smallpox, for example, caused around 2 million deaths in 1967, but by 1979, it had disappeared thanks to a worldwide program of vaccination. So, what are vaccines? Vaccines help prevent the spread of diseases by getting people’s immune systems to respond and build protection. As we all know, tiny germs called bacteria or viruses cause many diseases. When vaccinated against a disease, people are given these bacteria and viruses but in a dead or weakened form. This will lead to little to no sickness in the person who receives the vaccine. The dead or weakened bacteria or viruses cause the person’s immune system to produce proteins called antibodies which fight the disease. If the person is infected with the same viruses or bacteria, their immune system will already know how to fight them off. People can get vaccines in different ways, either in a shot, by mouth, or by a nose spray. It is also worth mentioning that vaccines may cause side effects that seriously affect some people. Therefore, drug companies are very cautious when it comes to vaccine production.

ZOO

In recent years, zoos have come under heavy criticism: from animal rights activists. However, the benefits of keeping animals in captivity outweigh the drawbacks. First of all, zoos protect many species that are on the verge of extinction in captivity, a species can be relatively safe from predators and bred to ensure there is a foundation population. Later, they can be reintroduced into the wild and thrive in their natural habitats. Without zoos, there would be fewer species alive, and ecosystems would suffer. Second, zoos can serve educational purposes. White documentaries on TV or the internet can entertain their audience with impressive and detailed depictions of wildlife, the experience is nowhere near as memorable as seeing the animals in real life. Hands-on or close encounters with a variety of animals have a greater impact on visitors. Not only do they learn how to appreciate wildlife, but also be more active in conservation efforts. Finally, zoos play an important role in research. Accredited zoos often receive funds or grants to carry out valuable research on captive animals, and their findings benefit not only captive but wild populations too. Working with captive animals also means there are fewer risks for researchers and fewer variables, which enhances research quality. Thanks to research, we have developed a better understanding of different endangered animal species, from which we can work out practical steps to counter the threats they face. Research, therefore, is crucial to the survival of those species. In summary, although not all zoos are well-equipped and there is always room for improvement, the benefits of zoos prove that they are vital for the conservation of animals and the education of the public.

Read the passage and write A, B, or C to indicate the paragraphs which the following details belong to.

Human curiosity has led to many inventions in the history of mankind. Following are three of the most important inventions that changed the world.

A. The printing press

The printing press was invented by German inventor Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century. This invention increased the speed at which books could be copied and, therefore, boosted the spread of knowledge. Thanks to the printing press, information could be shared more quickly and more easily.

B. The light bulb

In 1806, Humphry Davy, an English inventor, introduced the first electric arc lamp, which burned too brightly and quickly. Around seven decades later, in 1879, the first long-lasting light bulb that could burn for nearly 14 hours was invented and registered by Thomas Edison, a famous US inventor. Since it was created, the light bulb has replaced natural light, helped lengthen the average workday, and allowed people to travel more safely in the dark.

C. The telephone

Although several inventors worked on the idea at the same time, Alexander Graham Bell, a Scottish inventor, was the first one to patent his telephone on March 7th, 1876. The first phone call was made a few days later when Bell called his assistant, saying “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.” The invention of the telephone transformed the way we communicate. Most importantly, it allowed immediate contact in emergencies and long-distance communication.
