    In 2007, design graduates, Joe Gebbie and Brian Chesky, were struggling to pay the rent for their SanFrancisco apartment. Hearing that there was a conference coming to town and there were no hotel roomsavailable, they created the website airbedandbreakfast.com where they advertised three airbeds in their homeat $80 each a night, breakfast included. Only six days later, they had three guests sleeping on their floor.They knew immediately that this was the start of something big.

    Being budding entrepreneurs, the pair decided to take their idea further. They enlisted Gebbie'sformer flatmate, Nathan Blecharczyk, a computer science graduate, to develop their website. Their idea wasto target conferences and festivals across the USA, getting local people to list their rooms and travelers tobook them. The new website was completed just in time for the 2008 Democratic National Convention inDenver, at which Barack Obama was due to speak in front of 80,000 people. Within a week, they had 800listings, an achievement which dealt in part with the shortage of hotel rooms, but did not solve their financialproblems, as the site was not making any money.

    The team decided that they would have to handle payment for the bookings. They began to chargethree per cent to the host and between six and twelve per cent to the traveler, depending on the price of thebooking. Meanwhile, investors had started showing interest in the company. By April 2009, when largerinvestments began to arrive, they moved the company out of their flat into a new state-of-the-art office andhired more staff.

    Since then Airbnb has gone from strength to strength. The company now has over 1.5 millionlistings in 34,000 cities in 190 countries, and is rumoured to be worth around $20 billion.

    As we continue to face the impacts of climate change, having a green environment has becomeincreasingly important to the future of our society. To achieve this, the world is shifting towards greenenergy, and two particular types of energy at the centre of this movement are solar power and wind power.

    [I] This highly efficient form of energy produces zero emissions, so it can significantly reduce ourcarbon footprint. [II] Moreover, solar panels are perfect for installation on a small scale, such as in privatehomes, since they require very little maintenance and have a long lifespan. [III] However, the ability togenerate solar power depends on the time of day and weather conditions. This means that solar panels areoften less useful if they are installed in places where sunny weather is not typical. [IV]

    Wind power, on the other hand, involves converting the energy of the wind into electricity usinglarge turbines. Wind power doesn't produce any greenhouse gases, but it is not ideal for private use sinceturbines require consistent care. However, wind farms can be installed on a large scale and are able toproduce electricity continuously regardless of the time of day. This means that if there were moreinvestments in wind power, it could be a viable way to provide energy for major cities and even for wholeregions.

    Wind and solar power contribute significantly to a green environment by reducing our reliance onfossil fuels, helping us cut down on pollution and slow climate change. Additionally, using renewable energysources helps promote spending on sustainable development by creating new career opportunities in thegreen energy sector.

    For now, the biggest challenge of adopting green energy is the costs associated with installation andinfrastructure, but the benefits unquestionably outweigh the downsides. If we want to stop the climatecrisis and create a better and more sustainable future, green energy sources will undoubtedly be thekey.
