The Taj Mahal is the most popular tourist attraction in India. It is also one of the most spectacular buildings of the world, and is considered as a symbol of love. But how many people realise that it was actually built as a tomb or burial place for the Emperor’s wife?
The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan to commemorate his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal when she died, and, although this was not his original intention, for he had planned to build a black marble tomb for himself, they both lie side by side in the tomb today. Emperor Shahjahan’s two greatest passions were architecture and jewellery and both are represented here in all their splendor.
The most skilled architects and craftsmen came from across India and countries as far away as Persia and Turkey. Much of the structure was built in white marble that was carried by a thousand elephants all the way from the Indian region of Rajasthan some 300km away. Crystal and jade came from China, sapphires from Sri Lanka and turquoise from Tibet.
But there’s a lot more to the Taj Mahal than just the tomb, so let’s have a look at the overall plan before we take a walk through the magnificent gardens. Your tour begins here at the point marked with an X on the plan. This is known as The Main Gateway. Walk through the gate and you come into an magnificent garden. There are two marble canals studded with fountains, which cross in the centre of the garden, dividing it into four equal squares. Each of these four quarters is then subdivided into flower beds. So there are 16 flower beds altogether. The tomb stands majestically at the north end, not in the centre as you might have expected Instead, at the centre of the garden, halfway between the tomb and the gateway, there’s a raised pond which provides a reflection of the Taj Mahal. It’s a magnificent sight. On either side of the tomb there are buildings made of red sandstone. The one to the west – to the left on our plan – is a mosque. It faces towards Mecca and is used for prayer. On the east side of the Teg is a building known as the Rest House. It’s like the twin of the mosque, but because it faces away from Mecca, it was never used for prayer.
Many people have asked what the Rest House was for. Was it a place for pilgrims to stay? Was it a meeting hall of some kind? Perhaps the most likely answer to this question is that its purpose is purely aesthetic, to act as a visual balance for the mosque and to preserve the symmetry of the design of the whole complex.
Let’s have a look at some of the engineering features of the garden. For one thing, they require a constant supply of running water. When it was built, water was drawn from the river manually, using an elaborate rope and bucket system, pulled by a team of bullocks. The water was then brought through a broad water channel and held in a number of supply tanks. These tanks were at varying heights off the ground and were ingeniously designed to store the very large amounts of water required. Using an elaborate system of underground pipes, the water was then distributed from the supply tanks to each of the fountains. To ensure that the water pressure was the same throughout the garden, there was a copper pot under each fountain connected to the water supply. It was undoubtedly a brilliant system.

Host: Today we’re talking about children and their tendency to have imaginary friends. Liz McManus has a daughter called Caitlin, who’s eight now. When she was three, she had an imaginary friend called Tytner. Liz, tell us about Caitlin and Tytner.
Liz: Well, I’ll give you an example. One day I was driving Caitlin and Greg, her baby brother, home, when she solemnly informed me that Tytner was hitting the baby. So I said: ‘You tell Tytner that if he does that again, he’ll be walking home.’ Fifteen seconds later came the inevitable news: ‘He’s just done it again, Mummy.’ So I found myself in the embarrassing position of having to pull over, open the back door and say to this imaginary little boy. ‘Tytner, out, now!’ And of course, as we drove off, Caitlin started crying because her friend was standing on the pavement all alone. I had to turn back and go through the rigmarole of pulling over and opening the door to pick him up again.
Host: Wow, that’s some story! But in fact Caitlin is no different from many children and her invented, make-believe friend is far from unusual. As many as 65% of children have had an imaginary friend at some point in their lives. The latest research suggests that invisible friends, far from being a cause for concern, should be welcomed by parents because they can help children to be more creative, confident and articulate, and have more advanced communication skills. It is thought that these findings will help reverse misconceptions about children with imaginary friends and that they will come to be seen as having an advantage, rather than a problem that needs to be worried about. Did it worry you, Liz?
Liz: I know it does lots of parents but I never fretted about it, I think I was just amused. I’d be reading to her and I’d say, ‘Is Tytner around?’ and she’d say, ‘Yes, he’s just sitting at the end of the bed.’ He became the centre of her life. She’d have tea parties with him, and he’d go to bed with her. She was shy and this was her answer. I knew she would grow out of it.
Host: Now Liz is one of 15 people taking part in a study of imaginary friends at the Institute of Education in London, run by Karen Majors, an education psychologist and lecturer at the institute. Karen, should parents worry about it?
Karen: Well, parents sometimes think, ‘Is this healthy and how long should it go on for?’ But it is a normal phenomenon for normal children. And it’s very healthy.
Host: Why do children invent imaginary friends?
Karen: I think that children create pretend friends for many reasons: as safe, trustworthy best friends at a time when they are just starting to make real friends; as someone to confide in; and as someone to play with. Sometimes it is about wish fulfilment; children who cannot have a pet, for example, will invent one. I interviewed one little girl, aged six, who had a pony called Minty for several years. It went to school with her and the teachers knew all about it. It was a really strong relationship.
Host: Presumably, when they get older, children no longer have these imaginary friends. Karen?
Karen: Well, my most surprising finding is that children don’t always stop having these made-up playmates when they start school. The imaginary friends often stay with them through their teenage years, providing comfort and escape – although in secret. One teenager I talked to had invented a superhero to help him through tricky patches. When things hadn’t gone well at school, he would come home and play with the superhero, for whom everything always went well.
Host: How should parents treat these invisible people, Karen?
Karen: Well, sometimes of course parents get irritated by them – for instance, if a child insists on having the playmate at the dinner table with an imaginary setting and glass. Actually I myself had a friend called Tiger when I was young, who would sit beside me at mealtimes. But I don’t think parents should tell children off for this kind of thing, or tell them that their friends are not real. Perhaps the best way is Liz’s down-to-earth approach.
Host: How did you handle it, Liz?
Liz: Well, I patiently acknowledged Caitlin’s playmate but I tried not to get involved. I never used to have to get out of the friend’s way or anything. Other than that one incident in the car, Caitlin’s imaginary friend didn’t impinge on my life.
Karen: Yes, I agree that parents should recognize imaginary friends, but they shouldn’t try to overly influence the friendship. Parents who interfere too much risk driving their children’s playmates away. If they try to direct the friends, they could spoil the fantasy altogether.
Host: Fascinating subject, thanks for coming in to talk about it, Liz and Karen.

Paul: Hi. My name’s Paul Osborne. I work as a designer in the computer-game industry. Like a lot of my colleagues, I grew up playing video games; wasting money on arcades, playing the early game consoles. Computer games have always been a big part of my life.
Basically, lots of people are involved in the production of a game. As a designer, I’m largely concerned with the visual material that you see, so my background’s artistic. People sometimes wrongly assume that I’m a developer - that’s the guy with a maths background who actually figures out how the game works. We work closely together, of course, also with the game’s market researcher, who tells us what players are asking for.
So, how did I get into game designing? My degree was in art and design, and I did courses in painting and drawing as you’d expect, as well as one in computer graphics, which really captured my imagination, and one in animation. That was the one which enabled me to build up the key conceptual and visual design skills that I use now. But I wasn’t afraid of technology, so my career could’ve gone in a number of directions.
My first job was as a graphic designer, doing book covers largely, though occasionally video game boxes or CD sleeves did come my way too. After a while, an opening came up in the company’s games division for someone who had art and design sensibilities, along with some technical acumen, to work on things called user interfaces. I saw that as the opportunity to move into designing software. It was interesting to put together visual design, ergonomics, psychology and technology. I had some great mentorship from the head of my section and really developed a passion for the work.
Basically, what you’re responsible for as a designer is whether a game’s fun or not. I’ve worked on a number of great games: Purple Moon was my first big challenge, and I had a key role on Defending Planet X. But the one I got most out of was Star City because I was working on defining the multi-player experience. That’s when two or more people play against each other. We wanted multi-players to play the game as if they were creating their own narrative, as compared to a single player when they’re experiencing a story you’ve made up for them.
I love being able to come up with a cool idea and actually see it happen. The most challenging aspect of the game, however, is hitting the right level of difficulty. You want the game to be hard enough to reward people who gain expertise, but not so hard that people become frustrated and stop playing.
So, what does it take to be a game designer? You need the creativity to have a vision – see what will make a game fun and create a great experience. You need the communication to articulate that vision to other people and get them to do what you think needs to be done. But above all, you need dedication to see your vision through – to work your way through the disappointments and failures. When you’re three months from shipping, working until two in the morning, that’s what sees you through.

It is a well-known fact that Japanese people have a longer life expectancy than the population
of most other countries. A recent report shows that the Japanese also expect to remain healthier for longer. Scientists are trying to work out which keeps elderly Japanese people so healthy, and whether there is a lesson from which we benefit. Should we make any changes to our eating habits, for instance, or go jogging each day before breakfast? Is there some secret ingredient in the Japanese diet that is particularly beneficial for the human body? Because the prospect of a longer, healthier life is a good thing for the individual, it can create a social problem.
A number of people over the age of 65 in the population has doubled in the last 50 years and that has increased pension and medical costs. Japan could soon be encountered an economic
problem: there are more elderly people who need to be looked after and relatively fewer younger people working and pay taxes to support them. One solution could be to raise retirement age from 65 to 70. After all, the elderly have a great deal to contribute. If they continue to be active in society, younger generations will have the chance to learn their wisdom from experience.
Scientists are trying to work out which keeps elderly Japanese people so healthy,

A number of people over the age of 65 in the population has doubled in the last 50 years and that has increased pension and medical costs.
Đáp án đúng: Line 8: A number => The number
Giải thích: Ở đây động từ là has, nên phải dùng the number of.
Japan could soon be encountered an economic problem:
Đáp án đúng: Line 9: be encountered => encounter
there are more elderly people who need to be looked after and relatively fewer younger people working and pay taxes to support them.

Part 3. For questions 71-80, read the following passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) for each of the questions below. Write your answers in the corresponding numbered boxes on your answer sheet.
In the course of its history, human inventions have dramatically increased the average amount of energy available for use per person. Primitive peoples in cold regions burned wood and animal dung to heat their caves, cook food, and drive off animals by fire. The first step toward the developing of more efficient fuels was taken when people discovered that they could use vegetable oils and animal fats in lieu of gathered or cut wood. Charcoal gave off a more intense heat than wood and was more easily obtainable than organic fats. The Greeks first began to use coal for metal smelting in the 4th century, but it did not come into extensive use until the Industrial Revolution.
In the 1700s, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, most energy used in the United States and other nations undergoing industrialization was obtained from perpetual and renewable sources, such as wood, water streams, domesticated animal labor, and wind. These were predominantly locally available supplies. By mid-1800s, 91 percent of all commercial energy consumed in the United States and European countries was obtained from wood. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, coal became a major energy source and replaced wood in industrializing countries. Although in most regions and climate zones wood was more readily accessible than coal, the latter represents a more concentrated source of energy. In 1910, natural gas and oil firmly replaced coal as the main source of fuel because they are lighter and, therefore, cheaper to transport. They burned more cleanly than coal and polluted less. Unlike coal, oil could be refined to manufacture liquid fuels for vehicles; a very important consideration in the early 1900s, when the automobile arrived on the scene.
By 1984, nonrenewable fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, and natural gas, provided over 82 percent of the commercial and industrial energy used in the world. Small amounts of energy were derived from nuclear fission, and the remaining 16 percent came from burning direct perpetual and renewable fuels, such as biomass. Between 1700 and 1986, a large number of countries shifted from the use of energy from local sources to a centralized generation of hydropower and solar energy converted to electricity. The energy derived from nonrenewable fossil fuels has been increasingly produced in one location and transported to another, as is the case with most automobile fuels. In countries with private, rather than public transportation, the age of nonrenewable fuels has created a dependency on a finite resource that will have to be replaced.
Alternative fuel sources are numerous, and shale oil and hydrocarbons are just two examples. The extraction of shale oil from large deposits in Asian and European regions has proven to be labor consuming and costly. The resulting product is sulfur- and nitrogen- rich, and large-scale extractions are presently prohibitive. Similarly, the extraction of hydrocarbons from tar sands in Alberta and Utah is complex.
Semi-solid hydrocarbons cannot be easily separated from the sandstone and limestone that carry them, and modern technology is not sufficiently versatile for a large-scale removal of the material. However, both sources of fuel may eventually be needed as petroleum prices continue to rise and limitations in fossil fuel availability make alternative deposits more attractive.
What is the main topic of the passage?
Applications of various fuels
Natural resources and fossil fuels
A history of energy use
A historical overview of energy rates
Đáp án đúng: C
Giải thích: Bài đọc lần lượt kể lịch sử sử dụng năng lượng qua các thời kỳ → phù hợp nhất với “A history of energy use” (Lịch sử sử dụn năng lượng).

The search for energy efficiency has always benefited both the environment and the global economy equally.
Renewable energy has consistently remained humanity’s main source of power despite industrial expansion.
Modern society has successfully balanced the use of fossil fuels with the preservation of renewable resources.
Đáp án đúng: A

Teenagers should be encouraged to spend more time doing outdoor activities instead of using electronic devices.
Write a paragraph of about 140–160 words expressing your opinion on this view. Write your answer in the space provided on your answer sheet.
Suggested answer:
This paragraph argues that nowadays many children spend a lot of time on computers and electronic entertainment. I believe that spending more time outside playing sports with friends or games is a good way. On the one hand, young people prefer to spend all the time at home playing video games and do not do any exercise body which will cause many health problems, for example, obesity, poor eyesight, and inability to focus anything, in addition, they can not make relationship outside or in school because they feel it is difficult to do that. On the other hand, to solve this problem, we must try to encourage our children to spend there there time outside to build relationships, and also, do exercise by playing sports and games. That relies on helping them to be a smart and social person. In conclusion, we must try to develop skills in our children to improve in school and help them to be a social person and let them learn new things, and not let them stay all their time at home.
