Tourism can be beneficial for local communities. It creates jobs, supports small businesses, and helps protect cultural heritage. However, some famous destinations are now dealing with overtourism. This is a situation where so many visitors enter a region, negatively affecting local life and harming the environment.

Venice and Barcelona clearly show how serious this issue can be. In Venice, cruise ships deliver thousands of tourists daily, leaving streets crowded and making it hard for the natives to move around. In Barcelona, many locals say they can no longer afford the city center because hotels and short-term rentals have pushed housing costs up. More worryingly, constant crowds and noise undermine the natives' well-being.

The surroundings also pay a heavy price. Popular beaches are often littered with rubbish. Historic monuments are damaged when millions of visitors touch or climb on them. Natural landscapes lose their charm when they are worsened by heavy foot traffic. In some places, coral reefs have even been destroyed by careless tourists stepping on them or polluting the water.

To solve this problem, many destinations are taking steps to manage tourism. Some sites limit daily visitor numbers while others introduce entrance fees to control crowds and fund conservation. Also, only recognised travel agencies can organise tours to these places. Such actions can help communities reduce the harmful effects of overtourism and ensure that heritage is well preserved for future generations.
