Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35.

In the 1920s, the science fiction hero Buck Rogers flew across the pages of comicbooks using a jetpack. It was a vision of the future that has yet to actually be created. Now that we are living in the 21 century, people still aren't using jetpacks to getaround. Lots of inventors have tried to build working jetpacks over the years, but none ofthem have ever worked as well as the one Buck Rogers wore in the comic books. One jetpack that was recently demonstrated at the annual Experimental AircraftAssociation's Convention was the Martin jetpack. This jetpack was built by an inventorfrom New Zealand named Glenn Martin. Martin’s 120 kilogram jetpack holds abouttwenty liters of gasoline and can fly for about thirty minutes. Two large fans pointingtoward the sky create a jet of air that the jetpack operator flies on. The Martin jetpackmay be too loud and too heavy for the taste of some people. However, it really works, and it is on the market today.

Another jetpack that was demonstrated recently is Raymond Li’s Jetlev-Flyer.This is a jetpack that propels a person into the air by shooting out a jet of water ratherthan a jet of air. The Jetlev-Flyer is smaller and lighter than the Martin jetpack. This isdue to the fact that the engine and water pump for the jetpack is on a boat that is pulledalong behind the operator. A ten meter hose connects the engine and the pump to theJetlev-Flyer. In a test of his jetpack, Li flewalmost ten meters high and could travelforward at a speed of 35 kph.Neither the Martin jetpack nor theJetlev-Flyer are going to be big sellers. They are just too expensive for theaverage person. Both cost over$100,000 each.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.

Everything about Grand Central Terminal (GCT), conveniently locatedin the heart of Manhattan, is remarkable. On an average day, 700,000people pass in and out of it. The information booth in the Main Concourse(the huge room that is the focal point of the building) gets as many asa thousand visitors an hour. Standing beside it, you feel that if you stoodthere long enough you would eventually see every person you have everknown in your life. “It’s the town square for eight million people,” saysGCT spokesperson Dan Brucker. “If people get separated in the city, they’llmeet at the information booth.”

GCT’s art and style reflect the great economic success of railroad companiesbefore the growth of car and air travel. You could spend years in GrandCentral before you discovered all secrets: its tennis courts, its hiddenrailroad cars, its private ground-floor apartment (now a bar). Nine storiesbelow the lowest floor that the public gets tosee is a basement known as M-42. Bruckerexplains, “This is not just the deepest and thebiggest but the most secret basement in thecity. During World War II, there were shoot-to-kill orders if you showed up down here?”It was where the power came from tomove the trains carrying soldiers.Today, one box in the basement holdsa small red button, about the sizeof a coin. Above it is written“Emergency Stop.” If you pressedthis button, says Brucker, you could“make 125,000 people latefor dinner.”

Above the ground, the Main Concourse features a ceiling painted to30 look like the night sky, with stars shining down. Over the years, smokeblackened this beautiful ceiling. Although people thought smoke fromtrains was the cause, it was actually tobacco smoke! However, it has sincebeen cleaned and now shows its original beauty.

In the name of modernization, plans were made to destroy GCT in the1960s. However, many people objected, and finally New Yorkers decidedGCT was worth saving. In 1976, the U.S. government agreed. It madeGCT a National Historic Landmark, recognizing its importance forall Americans and ensuring its continued protection. Once threatenedwith destruction, Grand Central Terminal continues to give pleasure topassengers and sightseers in Manhattan.
