Gìn giữ hòa bình của Liên hợp quốc nhằm mục đích giúp các quốc gia bị ảnh hưởng nghiêm trọng bởi chiến tranh tạo điều kiện cho hòa bình lâu dài. Lực lượng gìn giữ hòa bình bảo vệ các tiến trình hòa bình ở các khu vực sau chiến tranh. Họ đảm bảo các nước tuân thủ các thỏa thuận hòa bình và người dân bình thường cảm thấy an toàn. Họ cũng hỗ trợ phát triển kinh tế và xã hội. Do đó, lực lượng gìn giữ hòa bình của Liên hợp quốc có thể bao gồm binh lính, sĩ quan cảnh sát, và cả những người không thuộc quân đội.

Là thành viên của Liên hợp quốc, Việt Nam ngày càng tích cực hơn trong các sự kiện toàn cầu. Từ năm 2014, Việt Nam đã cử hàng trăm lượt sĩ quan, nhân viên quân đội tham gia hoạt động gìn giữ hòa bình của Liên hợp quốc tại Cộng hòa Trung Phi, Nam Sudan và Cục Hoạt động gìn giữ hòa bình tại Trụ sở Liên hợp quốc ở New York, Hoa Kỳ. Thông qua các hoạt động gìn giữ hòa bình, Việt Nam đã góp phần đạt được hòa bình trong cộng đồng toàn cầu. Ngoài ra, nhiệm vụ này còn là cơ hội để Việt Nam quảng bá hình ảnh cũng như các giá trị văn hóa ra thế giới.
