ENGLISH AS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE

People often talk about English as an international language. But why English? In the

past, the British Empire spread English through trade because British merchants bought and

sold things around the world. Over time, English became a global language. Also, English

has simple grammar, and its vocabulary is easy to pick up, so it is the main language in

international trade, industry, finance and entertainment.

Did you know that today there are over 1.5 billion English speakers and millions of

people taking up the languages every day? When we think of English, we usually think of the UK, but did you know that 67 countries have English as one of their official languages?

Although the USA has the largest number of English speakers in the world, English isn’t an

official language there. In fact, the USA hasn’t got an official language. Despite having two official languages, Canada has the third-largest English-speaking population, while Australia and New Zealand are next. Two other countries which use English as the main language are the Republic of Ireland and South Africa.

Since English is popular all around the world, speaking English is something you

have in common with others wherever you go.
