UNICEF partnered with Fridays For Future, founded by Greta Thunberg, to talk with youth climate activists about their experiences and actions.
María, 19, from Mexico, has seen the climate crisis up close, especially the water crisis. Droughts and rising temperatures cause forest fires, while cyclones cause floods and ruin harvests. She became a full-time activist, believing water scarcity is part of a larger ecosystem. “To preserve water, we have to preserve the forests,” she says.
Russell Raymond, 17, from Dominica, experienced Hurricane Maria in 2017, which devastated his country. It submerged streets, blew roofs off homes and schools, and forced his family to seek shelter. He uses photography to document the hurricane's impacts. “Alternate forms of energy like solar and wind can stop climate change or at least put a mark on it,” he says.
