THE DAILY LIFE OF A JAPANESE TEENAGER

Akari is 13 years old. She lives in Osaka with her family. Every morning, she has breakfast at a low table which is called a ‘kotatsu’. She often has steamed rice, miso soup and grilled fish, then she completes her breakfast with a cup of hot green tea. After breakfast, she walks to school. It only takes five minutes because her school is so close to her house. She goes to school from Monday to Friday and sometimes, Saturday mornings, too. Her favourite subjects are art and maths. When Akari has free time, she enjoys playing all kinds of sport. Table tennis is her favourite at the moment. She loves table tennis because it’s an indoor sport, so she can play whether it’s raining or snowing outside. Both her brothers love this sport too, so she usually plays against one of them. It really doesn’t matter who wins because the most important thing is having fun. She says people don’t need expensive equipment to play table tennis. All they need is a paddle, a ball and a table to play on.
