Read a text about sunburn. Decide if each of the statements is TRUE, FALSE or NI (NOINFORMATION).
SUNBURN
Skin that has been burned in the sun feels hot and unpleasant. It usually occurs within a few hours afterspending too much time in the sun. One of the symptoms of sunburn is inflamed skin, which can appear pinkor red on white skin, but it may be harder to notice on brown or black skin. You can get a fever or a headache,in addition to eye sores if the sunburn gets worse.
Any body part, including the lips and earlobes, can be burned if they are in the sunlight. Even covered partsof the skin may burn if clothing allows ultraviolet (UV) light to pass through it. UV light does not only comefrom the sun, as often believed, but also from man-made sources like sunlamps and tanning beds. It can gothrough deep skin layers and cause long-term damage.
Sunburn is the result of the immune system’s reaction, which is an increase in blood flow to the injured areas. On cool or cloudy days, you might still get sunburned since water, sand, and other reflective surfaces likesnow can still reflect the sun. After being in the sun for a few hours, sunburn symptoms gradually develop.
The top layer of the damaged skin may peel off within a few days as the body begins to mend itself. Healingfrom a serious sunburn could take several days. Everyone should take steps to protect their skin from the sunall year round by applying sunscreen and other skin-protection techniques. It is also necessary when you’reoutside, even on cool or cloudy days.
Inflamed skin is the most serious symptom of sunburn.
All parts of our body can also be burnt if they are not protected against the UV light.
UV light only affects the surface of our skin.
Our immune system responses by transporting more blood to the burn.
