The Skeleton Coast

The Skeleton Coast is the coastline of southern Africa. It got its name because people found many bones fromwhales and seals there. There were also a lot of human bones along the coast. This place is famous for havinga large number of shipwrecks, over a thousand in fact. When sailors hear about the Skeleton Coast, they areusually terrified.

In 1912, a ship called The Gertrud Woermann II sank and disappeared into the ocean. The ship was carryinghundreds of people, horses, and other items when it was destroyed by a strong storm. The Winston was anothershipwreck off the Skeleton Coast. It hit the shore on 17 October, 1970. People can still see parts of the shipalong the coast.

Sometimes a shipwreck comes with treasure. The discovery of the Bom Jesus was in April 2008, and a workerfound many gold coins from the shipwreck. Most of the coins were of Spanish origin. However, it is believedthat the ship came from Portugal, and it was sailing to India.

People found many bones of animals and humans along the coast.

Skeleton Coast is a favourite place for sailors.
