Read the following blog about social media and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the option that best fits each of the following questions from 23 to 30.

Using social media is bad for your studies and bad for your real-world social life. Those are two claims in an article that I read yesterday. But are they true? Well, like most people, I started using social media in my teens. Unfortunately, I found it so much easier to check my timeline, chat online or watch a funny video than to study for an hour! Too often, I wasted time instead of working. The effect on my grades was dreadful!

So when I left school, I actually closed all my social media accounts and put my energy into real life. Sadly, after six months, I found I was losing touch with old friends and missing out on their news and events. Clearly, thereare massive real-world disadvantages if you ignore social media. When I opened my accounts again, I taught myself to control the time I spent online. In my view, thats what we all need to do.

Of course, using social media isnt only about building great friendships, making useful contacts, getting news at the speed of light, and so on. There are almost as many dangers and disadvantages too, but it seems to me thats true of all social activities. In my view, theres no point in avoiding social media. Hopefully, we can learn to make use of its fantastic advantages and avoid the negative aspects.

Read the following passage about conservation efforts and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the option that best fits each of the following questions from 31 to 40.

Making a difference

Human actions are taking a heavy toll on the environment, and if we don’t do some-thing about it, we risk losing more of the natural world. Change isn’t easy, but it is not out of reach.

In Madagascar, a fisherman named Samson is rolling up his sleeves to help his community take better care of its local waters. He and other fishermen realized that they were overfishing. [I] With the help of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Samson learned the importance of not catching too many young fish because if there are too few of them in the ocean, there won’t be enough adult fish to reproduce. [II] Samson now works to help fishermen change their techniques so that fishing can be sustainable. [III] He believes that protecting the ocean is everybody’s job. [IV] “Take your responsibilities with courage and never think that you are alone. We are all in this together.”

Across the ocean in Florida, USA, the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) couldn’t turn a blind eye to the piles of single-use plastic items, like coffee stirrers, bottles, and drinking straws, littering the beaches and wreaking havoc on the ocean wildlife. Straws, in particular, spell trouble for turtles: they can get stuck in turtles’ noses and hurt them terribly. So, the STC kicked off the project “Where are the straws?” asking local restaurants to stop giving customers straws with their drinks. Now, many restaurants will only give straws if customers ask for them, and the straws they do give out are paper, not plastic.

Those are just a couple of the many conservation efforts found all over the world today. These projects all show us that change is within our grasp and it can start with small actions in our own community. We are part of the problem. It’s high time we stepped up to be part of the solution.
