Perhapsitwasbecausehewasahandsome,red-hairedcountryboy,theson ofapoorminerfromOklahoma.Hiscareer,fromtheleadminesoftheWestto theheightsofsuccessandfame,wasafairy-taleversionoftheAmerican dream.OrperhapsitwasbecauseAmericaalwayslovesa“natural”:apersonwhowinswithoutseemingtotry,whosetalentappearstocomefromaninner grace. That was Mickey Mantle.

Butlikemanycelebrities,MickeyMantlehadaprivatelifethatwasfullof problems.Heplayedwithoutcomplaintdespiteconstantpainfrominjuries.He lived to fulfill his father’s dreams and drank toforget his father’s early death.
