All of us communicate with one another nonverbally, as well as with words. Most of the time we’re not aware that we're doing it. We gesture with eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else's eyes and look away, change positions in a chair. These actions we assume are occasional. However, in recent years researchers have discovered that there is a system to them almost as consistent and understandable as language.

One important kind of body language is eye behavior. Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another's eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both of us look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other’s eyes, they become more intimate. Therefore, we carefully avoid this, except in suitable situations.

Researchers who are engaged in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or refusing something. But there are other possible interpretations, too. Another example: when a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man's eyes a little longer than is usual, it can be a sign of respect; it can be something else entirely. The researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture.

The Old Woman and the Doctor

An old woman became almost totally blind from a disease of the eyes. After consulting a doctor, she made an agreement with him in the presence of witnesses that she would pay him a high fee if he cured her. However, if he failed, he would receive nothing. The doctor prescribed a course of treatment and visited her on a regular basis to apply ointment to her eyes. With each visit, he took away with him some article from the house, until at last, when he visited her for the last time and the cure was complete, there was nothing left. I know that it is my job to make sure that everything goes well for the tourists and I feel I work hard for the company. I cannot be blamed for last week; I met a group at the airport and took them to the coach. The coach driver was a bit annoyed because the flight was late. But it wasn't far to the hotel and everyone was looking forward to their dinner. We hadn't used the Hotel Riviera before but our normal one had a conference in it so it was fully booked.           Sally Ride, America’s first spacewoman, doesn’t look very different from a lot of other American professional women. She is attractive, with curly brown hair, dark brown eyes, and a bright smile. She likes to dress simply, she wears comfortable but colorful clothes, like many people from California. But in 1983 Sally Ride became America’s first woman astronaut. She was one of the five astronauts on the space shuttle Challenger, which completed a successful six-day voyage in space in June 1983. What makes a woman want to go into space?

          Sally Ride grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her father is a professor at Santa Monica College, and her mother is a housewife. At Westlake High School for girls, she was both an excellent student and tennis player. Today she still looks like a sportswoman. She is 1.6 metres tall, weighs 52 kilos, and is very fit. When she was still a student, she became a very successful tennis player. She thought about becoming a professional sportswoman but she decided to continue with her studies at college, and later at university.

Thomas Alva Edison was born in Ohio in 1847. As a child, he received less than a year of formal schooling, but was educated at home. His parents allowed him to set up a laboratory in their basement and his mother gave him books about chemistry and electronics. Edison credits his mother as being ‘the making’ of him.
